Radio shake-up

First published in Letters by

LIKE many other listeners to BBC Radio York sport reports, I was devastated to find out that our two favourites, Barry Parker and Sharon Shortle, seem to have been unceremoniously removed from their posts.

This has brought back memories of a few years ago when Barry was sadly removed from his York City commentary position, only to be reinstated a year later.

I cannot believe that such a committed icon of local radio sport could be treated in this way. I am sure Barry must be devastated.

Barry’s deep commitment to York City FC is second to none. It is so evident in the amount of research and knowledge Barry puts into the match commentary for BBC Radio York to make each broadcast amusing and interesting.

I have listened to the new season’s broadcasts from York City and now I no longer look forward to future broadcasts with the same relish. If the reason for Barry and Sharon’s removal is to improve listener numbers, I think Radio York has made a backward step.

I have also written to the station manager to vent my protest and ask for an explanation, with as yet no reply.

Ray Gilpin, Badgerwood Walk, Badger Hill, York.

Barry might be a bit of an icon, and I'm sure he's a nice bloke, but he's a terrible football commentator. I want to know what's happening during the game, not what number bus is passing the ground.

This has been a good change. God forbid we go back to him again.

I suspect Barry Parker irritated far more people than he entertained, so it was only a matter of time before he was going to be removed from commentary again.

Sharon is a different matter. She always struck me as an excellent broadcaster, with a deep affection for all local sport, not just football. I can see no good reason why she couldn't have been invited to be the presenter of the new-look show.

The new team seems adequate, but why attempt to fix something that isn't broken?

There are far too few women sports broadcasters as it is, without getting rid of one of the best there is.

From comments in the Press and on the internet it seems no one gets a response when they contact the station manager asking why he's done this.

I miss Barry too, he's been there that long he's become an institution, the new folk at least are better than the last replacement we had though, he was terrible.

It's a shame no-ones pressing for a terrace in this new much talked about ground.

I heard a rumour at the match last night that Radio York are looking to commentate on L**ds United & Middlesbrough matches. They reckon that's what the York residents want! That'll be me switching off then.
