IVF dilemma

WHILE I agree that people with problems concerning drugs and alcohol need help (Letters, August 15), I do not agree that IVF treatment should be made available on the NHS.

The NHS in my opinion is solely there for people who are ill; that is, suffering from something that is affecting their daily life and they need treatment to put that right.

I do not think that IVF treatment falls into that category as the person needing IVF is not ill, and the funds that may be used for IVF are being drawn away from other areas where need it the most.

Paul Hudson, Burnsall Drive, York.

...infertility is a medical issue. It counts as 'illness' just as much as hundreds of other things which get treated on the NHS.

Not ill informed. The money that is needed for IVF should be used for the treatment of cancer. It is more traumatic having cancer than being unable to have children.

Cancer is more traumatic than a lot of things the NHS cover. Do you have a full list of treatments you would stop?

The view of someone who is able to have a family? or not? Cancer is very traumatic to those affected by it.

It is not a point of whether or not IVF should be available on the NHS, it is a point that York is the only place in the country where it is not available. We all pay the same so should get the same service.
