THE comments made by Keith Chapman (Letters, August 14) are supported by me. When commenting to First Group on their services, I originally had replies from James Street, York.

The replies then came from Donisthorpe, Leeds and now it is Midland Road, Rotherham.

I think that this sums up the attitude of First Group Plc towards the residents of York. We are an outpost of their West/South Yorkshire enclave and, as such I think that their interest is limited only so far as their profit line dictates.

I would advise anybody wishing to complain to go on to the First York website and use the “contact us” page.

Neil Raw, Oriel Grove, Clifton Without, York.

We are indeed an outpost, and a neglected one. When a previous route reorganisation didn't suit me, I rang and (had to be persistent!) spoke to a mastermind. When he couldn't quite get a geographical point, I said "where do you live?" "Pontefract". And no, he had no real knowledge of York, he relied on the computerised magic of their ticketing system. I pointed out that for people with day or season tickets that only told him where people got on, NOT where they got off, still less where they wanted to go.

York has been an 'outpost' for some time now, on and off... during the days of the National Bus Corporation when buses round here were red and white, York was part of the West Yorkshire operation; then in early privatisation, the Yorkshire Rider group bought out Reynard Pullman which was operating in York, and so the operation became Rider York - still an outpost to the West Yorkshire-based Yorkshire Rider, of which we had a lot of older cascaded vehicles that other depots had no use for. It's not just York though... Stagecoach operates buses in Hull, but they are operated under the license for their operations in Lincolnshire - though originally it was their Cleveland Transit operation (Tyne and Wear).

It is worth noting though that 6 of First York's oldest single deckers are leaving York for Leeds within the next month or two, replaced by 6 more electric buses which are likely going to allow 6 of the current silver park and ride buses to go onto normal services - thereby in effect replacing buses dating to 2001 with ones dating to 2008.
