Couples need aid

I AM disgusted and disappointed in the decision by York NHS to abandon the free IVF treatment in York (The Press, August 8).

York is the only city not having this facility. Why? We seem to waste money in A&E on the drunks and the drug-takers(which is their own doing), while the benefits system encourages single mums and those who have never worked to have as many children as they want. So why can we not give childless couples a hand?

My children were lucky not to need help, so this is not a personal plea. I’m just someone who believes that there are couples out there who need IVF and as a right they deserve help from the York NHS.

Ann, York (Full name and address supplied).

This is a difficult problem, and I wouldn`t like to be the one who has to decide where the funds go these days where money is so tight for public services. Medical science is expanding faster than the nation`s budgeting ability to pay for it

Sensible and unemotional reply, Gwen4me. It is a very tricky decision.

I am disgusted that a breast cancer drug is not available, because of cost.Which in my opinion and those who require it is more important than than free IVF treatment.

You know, it would have been perfectly possible to argue that the cost IVF should be covered in York without demonising single mothers or those who receive benefits.

whilst I agree that it is unfair that York Teaching Trust NHS foundation continue not to fund IVF I must raise an issue with other points you have made. You state the NHS waste money on “drunks and drug takers. Calling someone a “drunk” is not helpful as alcoholism and drug abuse are in the twenty first century recognised as diseases, and both are heavily influenced by socio-economic factors and are not simply “lifestyle choices” The reason that I feel the trust withholding funding for IVF is unfair is that is goes against two of Bevan`s founding principles of the NHS, the first being that “ it meets the needs of everyone” and the second “ that it be free at the point of delivery” I feel this should be applied equally to people with drug and alcohol issues as to those who are seeking IVF. You suggest the NHS is wasting money on “drunks and drug takers as this is of their own doing”, so should they also refuse to treat people who have caught Cancer because of smoking and people who are obese through eating unhealthily?

If you want people to be on your side with this issue then writing a letter saying this is not the way to go about it.
