DURING the Second World War, the Nazi regime attempted the total annihilation of the Jewish race (Letters, August 2).

In 1947, an exodus of European Jews took place and their destination was their traditional ‘homeland’, Israel. Initially rebuffed, they eventually succeeded and founded modern Israel.

The Six Day War of 1967 saw an attack on Israel by Syria, Jordan and Egypt whereby these three nations hoped to destroy Israel. Israel was victorious and routed the attackers.

Now there is the current onslaught whereby Hamas wishes to destroy Israel.

Hamas carry on a continual bombardment of Israel, in an attempt to destabilise the area. Israel takes exception to this bombardment and fights back. Unfortunately Hamas sets up its rocket launchers in civilian areas.

A terrible consequence of these attacks is the numbers of children and civilians being killed or injured.

However, the deaths and injuries of Palestinians pales into virtual insignificance when compared to the numbers being killed/injured by the warring Sunni and Shia Muslims in Iraq, Syria and Libya.

All wars are abhorrent. As Churchill once said: “Jaw, jaw is better that war, war”.
