I NOTICE the head of marketing at York Racecourse blames “wider society problems” for the violence in York at the weekend (Drunks put A&E under pressure, July 29).

He does not have to look too far to prove his point - the horse racing industry is highly dependent on alcohol (sales and sponsorship), gambling and the patronage of a wealthy elite.

So it's nothing to do with people coming out of York races and staggering up to Micklegate were they cross the road at will unaware of oncoming traffic. The sooner York racecourse bans alcohol in any form the better. And has all licenses revoked.

I really do not know how they get so drunk, there is nothing worth drinking at York races, session beers such as John Smiths and Fosters and Kronenberg, oh and a Theakstons tent, but paralytic they do get, Hospitals should start charging for drink related treatment.
