I REFER to the letter from Mike Usherwood (Language barrier, July 26) in which he requests people stop calling Bishopthorpe “Bishy” and Doncaster “Donny”.

I am hazarding a guess that Mr Usherwood’s first name is an abbreviation of Michael, just as Bishy and Donny are abbreviations of the real place names.

I shall await Mr Usherwood’s use of his full name before I stop using Bishy, Donny, Ponty, Darlo or Boro.

Jen Wake, Thirsk.

Quite right, Jen! After all, we don't complain about the Normans abbreviating Jorvik to Euerc/York!
