WITH reference to Keith Chapman’s recent query regarding why we don’t have a town crier for York. Well Keith, I have known since you were a young boy, and I am still in touch with the family.
York did have a town crier about 20 years ago.
I do believe he was named John Redpath. He had to supply his own outfit which was special. But the then York city council would not pay him to support him in wages. Nobody can work without money.
