I HAVE a lot of time for Councillor John Galvin, who many do not consider a proper Tory. He has also not taken to personal attacks on opponents or council staff as his party in York has chosen to under its current leadership.

He wrote to The Press saying he wrote to me two and a half weeks ago suggesting building housing on the site of the old Askham Bar park and ride and had not received a response (Letters, July 19).

This letter was shared with Minster FM before I received it and I responded through the same medium. I explained the timing was uncanny as this proposal was already under consideration.

I welcomed Cllr Galvin for his support. Cllr Galvin apologised to me for sharing the letter with the media before it was sent to me. I take no offence as these things happen in politics.

I thought my reply to Minster FM was sufficient. I have had several conversations with Councillor Galvin since he shared this letter with the media and he has not raised any concern with me.

I am happy to write to him more formally explaining that Labour is the party of developing social housing.

Cllr James Alexander, Labour Leader, City of York Council.
