FROM within old mother York’s towering Minster came 90 minutes of celestial bliss. It took this scribe completely by surprise as he reached out to switch off the radio in down under Perth.
A feature of York’s annual early music festival, the programme consisted of works by – in alphabetical order – Richard Davy, John Mundy and and John Sheppard.
The vocalists, a choir conducted by Harry Christophers, were recorded by the BBC and passed on to the ABC Classic FM to which I have become addicted.
In the mid 1990s I regularly attended Evensong in the Minster. To these treasured memories I now attribute my seasonal bouts of manageable homesickness that explain in part these delayed impressions of the occasion.
Congratulations, and my heartfelt thanks, to all involved.
