Market is back in its rightful place

Market stalls on Parliament Street are proving popular while work is under way in the market area

HOW heart-warming and nostalgic to see the market back in its rightful place in Parliament Street.

On Saturday, there was a real community feeling and a very happy atmosphere.

The market is the hub of retail in York, at least it was in the past. Market traders have been central to our social history, therefore they should be given centre stage, not hidden in the background – save that for visiting markets.

The market is one of York’s showcases: keep it that way by leaving it in Parliament Street for everyone to enjoy.

Joyce Gee, Kingsway North, Clifton, York.

There is no way Sonja will allow that to happen. Too few photo opportunities.

Bitter, Paul. Can we not just stick to the topic?
Agree with Oi Oi - well written letter and yes, good to see the market back, my memory remembers how it used to be too; great community feel and lots of bargains!

They would hardly let the market stay in Parliament Street when they are spending £1 million + on it's site. That would be a waste of money. Oh wait, it's York council - I will have to rethink that last statement.

Please note there not investing its a loan! which traders have to pay back over 5 years. Newgate is going to be a total waste of money! The market should be left were it is now. Plus Sonja hates the market along with Jill who is very rude to traders. Also CYC make too much money from events which kills trade in Newgate What sort of council allow farmers markets in a prime location when there's plenty of empty stalls in Newgate which were the farmers stalls originally.
