Trains ambition

York Press: Trains ambition Trains ambition

YOU report on the council’s ambitions for the East Coast Main Line (The Press, July 15).

Trains reaching 100mph seem a bit of a come down from the current 125mph trains which have been running on the line since the late 1970s.

The existing electrics were designed for 140mph and are only prevented from doing so by the signalling system.

A more worthwhile ambition would be to modernise that.

Nick Derbyshire, South Esplanade, York.

Yes, in the early 90s I was regularly whisked non-stop from King's Cross in one hour 45. Ah, those were the days - bring back British Rail!
