Car park problem

First published in Letters by

I USED the Marygate car park on Wednesday and found it has a new system of pay on exit.

However, once again the council failed to take us into the 21st Century.

The machines, for some reason, don’t accept card payments.

We now live in an era where many people use their bank cards for most everyday items.

Sadly, I don’t carry £11.50 around with me in loose change and neither did a visiting tourist who was also struggling to make payment.

Please can City of York Council think before installing another machine.

Joe Fillingham, Thanet Road, York.

100% agree. Free broadband is made a priority, but it really is crazy to expect people to carry pound and pounds of loose change in this day and age.

There is a question tabled for Thursday Council meeting from Cllr Ann Reid to the responsible Cabinet member (Levene), which makes this precise point. http://tinyurl.com/Q

There was only a marginal equipment saving when Labour decided to omit the card payment option from the specification for the new "pay on exit" ticket machines.

Just reflects a lack of experience and attention to detail.

As someone who seldom parks in York, can anyone tell me how the new £20 Minster Badge Older Residents Parking Discount badge will operate?
Is there a barrier for the "Pay On Exit" system, and how will this work for those of us who will not have to pay after 6pm?

Apparently you press a button marked resident parking (or similar) when you enter the Marygate car park and get a ticket.

When leaving you put the ticket into the machine to validate it.

Then just drive away.

No chance of anyone misusing the facility then !!!

CYC has just spent hundreds of thousands repaving Kings Square and it's noticeable now that the same 2 or 3 cars now just park right in the middle of it every morning, no sign of them ever getting told to move they must think it just belongs to them for their own convenience.

The motto is don't pay to park in a carpark, just stick it on Kings Square.
