SO councillors Alexander and Merritt don't want an inquiry into the complete farce that was the Lendal Bridge closure (Lendal Bridge Inquiry opposed, June 5).

Is it because they are frightened that it makes them look more incapable than we already know?

At the time opposition was voiced by retailers, the public and York residents. But they went ahead because they knew best (and because they chose to ignore the general outcry). Now after problems with the fines (are they going to reimburse the many visitors?) they don't want an inquiry.

Do they realise that it was a mistake? Will they admit they were wrong? No.

They will bury their heads in the sand and hope it goes away. As usual.

S McClaren, Boroughbridge Road, York.
