Complete farce of bridge closure

SO councillors Alexander and Merritt don't want an inquiry into the complete farce that was the Lendal Bridge closure (Lendal Bridge Inquiry opposed, June 5).

Is it because they are frightened that it makes them look more incapable than we already know?

At the time opposition was voiced by retailers, the public and York residents. But they went ahead because they knew best (and because they chose to ignore the general outcry). Now after problems with the fines (are they going to reimburse the many visitors?) they don't want an inquiry.

Do they realise that it was a mistake? Will they admit they were wrong? No.

They will bury their heads in the sand and hope it goes away. As usual.

S McClaren, Boroughbridge Road, York.

I think we've heard enough about this fiasco by now. The culprits will get their well deserved come-uppance next May. In the meantime can we not let it rest?

No. Why should they get away with squandering our money on Mr Merritt's pet plan to rid the city of cars just because he does not like them despite the obvious prosperity they have and continue to bring.

No, I think Mr McClaren has this correct. This discredited and arrogant administration should be bought to book over this fiasco. They listened to no-one until it was inevitable the bridge HAD to reopen. Even then, they only listened to their own councillors who could see how bad they would fare at the elections next May.
Roll on next May when we can rid York of Alexander, Merrett & Co.

You've acknowledged that next May is the opportune time to bring retribution and endorses what I said. So how in the meantime do you suggest we bring this mob to book?

The remaining labour supporters are dwindling now looking at the pro alexander votes above. Is this why this labour council are piling immigrants into York, in the hope they will vote for them.

The idea was not a 'fiasco'. To implement it as a trial is what made it one. For the car addicts to say "do nothing and the traffic problems and the damage that they do to York's environment, will sort themselves out...." really IS sticking your head in the sand
