I’M DISGUSTED to read that, although MPs have recently demanded that “Prince’s Consent” should be scrapped, the Cameron Government has no plans to act.
It means that Prince Charles can continue to have an exclusive veto over new laws that affect his interests. Truly, the royal veto sums up what’s wrong with the monarchy and why we desperately need a democratic alternative.
This Government ensures one individual has the power to insist on changes to laws that affect his private concerns. Who said the monarchy isn’t a de facto dictatorship masquerading as parliamentary democracy?
It is our right as human beings to live in a society where all power can be held to account.
“For all men being originally equals, no one by birth could have a right to set up his own family in perpetual preference to all others for ever, and though himself might deserve some decent degree of honours of his contemporaries, yet his descendants might be far too unworthy to inherit them.
“One of the strongest natural proofs of the folly of hereditary right in kings, is, that nature disapproves it, otherwise she would not so frequently turn it into ridicule by giving mankind an ass for a lion.” Thomas Paine: Common Sense (1776).
