FIRST impressions of a city are often formed by visitors within a short time of their arrival.

Is it too much to ask, therefore, if the pavement from the railway station to Lendal Bridge, which skirts the cholera burial ground, could be swept?

The amount of cigarette detritus littering this area is a disgrace and nothing short of a good sweep with an old fashioned broom will sort out the problem.

Mrs S Galloway, Stirrup Close, Ainsty Park, York.

It's been lined with cig butts and other filth for months. It's a pathetic first impression of our city. Other historic cities in Europe I've been to always look immaculate - so why can't York?

Likewise, King's Square, which has just had £500,000 spent on it to make it a "world-class space" was covered in litter over the bank holiday weekend - and so was most of the city centre.

It's not rocket science. Too few street sweepers = dirty streets.

Mrs Thatcher would have set to and done it herself. Come on Mrs Galloway, money where mouth is, get those sleeves rolled up.

I think our council is too busy coming up with crazy schemes such as Minster Plazza and Kings Square and the 20mph limits that ony 7 people in the city want.

I thought everything was Mrs Thatchers fault ?
surly she was the one who dropped all the fag ends and litter, or maybe she removed the councils power to clean it up.

in my opinion 500k would have better spent cleaning up the city rather than on one square, but when your wasting other people money it doesn't really matter.
