WHY do we need a spur to York causing more environmental damage?
After the proposed introduction of the Pendolino trains on the East Coast Line and the Parliamentary Environmental Committee’s recommendation to run the HS2 trains slower to reduce carbon emissions, there will be little, if any, time savings to London.
In addition, any economic benefit to York, which is queried today in the IEA report, will not be incremental but a redistribution from other towns in the area.
The scrapping of this spur would also hopefully retain the frequency of passenger services south of York which under HS2 are due to be reduced.
