Speed cameras

NOW that the council has lost all that revenue from opening up Lendal Bridge, why don’t they buy some hand-held speed cameras and catch all those vehicles exceeding the 20mph limit they are introducing in York streets?

Just think of the revenue they could collect. Wow!

No police officer would give a ticket to someone travelling at 30MPH in a 20MPH zone as they normally travel above the speed indicated. I often see police vehicles travelling at 30MPH in 20MPH zones so maybe the public should start recording police vehicles traveling at 30MPH in 20MPH zones, most,if not all the police would be on foot within 12 months.

Slight problem that only police can enforce moving traffic offences - bus lane cameras being the exception!!

More interestingly, I wonder what FirstGroup policy is towards these 20mph limits. I’m sure some of their drivers ignore them.

Rather a pointless letter really, York would need another thousand police just to stand with a speed gun. I do not think so.

Good idea, but not the people doing 30mph in a 20 zone cause there a waste of time and money, but rather the idiots that drive over 33mph in a 30 zone.

20mph Zones cannot be enforced with cameras etc, they can only be enforced with traffic calming measures. A 20mph Limit (there is a difference between a zone and limit) can be enforced with a camera, however it is very rare that there is a limit that meets the ACPO requirements for enforcement. As the areas in York are zones not limits, this would be a non starter.

To be fair, without the 20mph zones in South Bank we could have seen a return to the pre-2013 hell of zero deaths.
