HAVING a great interest in Australia, I was baffled by the protesters who unveiled their banner on Clifford’s Tower.

In seeking to make a point about immigration policy, one would have thought it important to get the facts right.

The first convict fleet did not sail in 1775 but in 1787 and landed at Port Jackson (now Sydney) on January 26, 1788.

Also, it is a long time since anyone in Britain had any say over who should or should not be allowed into the great southern land. I doubt the Australian prime minister Tony Abbott will be particularly influenced by a protest on the other side of the world. Wouldn’t the banners be better attached to Sydney Harbour Bridge or the Opera House?
