I FIND it interesting that, based on your front-page article of April 16, it would appear that the Labour group, usually so closely controlled by their masters, broke free during their private meeting and voted to open Lendal Bridge.

Isn’t this the same Labour group which prohibited opposition groups from debating Lendal Bridge at the last full council meeting on a technicality?

The only political group in York that has consistently spoken common sense on the closing has been the Conservatives. We took a measured view and didn’t automatically obstruct the idea of a trial.

When it became clear that there were sign problems galore we said so. And when the statistics showed that it all just wasn’t working, we said: “Open the bridge now”.

That’s real transparency, not the lip-service Labour kind, and deserving of the respect that more and more York citizens are expressing in your columns.
