MIKE Usherwood again makes assumptions about cyclists (Letters, April 16).

Firstly the video of ‘bad cyclists’ was taken by a self-styled ‘careful cyclist’, who, like me, despairs at the antics of the minority of idiots out there, whether they are cyclists, drivers or pedestrians.

In the video, carefully edited to show the bad cyclists, I counted 14 cyclists who were ‘good cyclists’ and obeying the rules of the road and 24 who were actually breaking the law, while the rest of the cyclists were just doing ‘silly’ things like riding with no hands, not noticing a car indicating left and using phones.

Since the publication of this video, I’ve done some counting of cyclists and reckon 90 per cent are law abiding and careful.

The one in ten who ignore red lights and cycle on pavements give the rest of us a bad name.

Secondly, roads are paid for through general taxation, and as far as I know, most of us contribute to VAT, fuel duty, vehicle excise duty and income tax. This is where the money to pay for our roads comes from.

As for identification and insurance, I quite like the idea. Do any countries have a bike registration system we could adopt?
