SUPERMARKETS tell us we waste too much food. Not guilty: I can think of a hundred ways to use up leftover potatoes/slices of stale bread.
I could not believe the amount of fresh turkeys left on the shelves of a supermarket minutes before closing time on Christmas Eve – all reduced to half price.
Who can leave shopping to the last minute, not knowing what will be reduced in price? It was obvious the store had ordered far too many.
Multiply this waste by possibly the same amount left in their other 400 or more branches and you can see a mountain of unsold food.
The buyers seem to miscalculate demand. Same story with all the pre-packed, dated veg/fruit/ready meals. Surely it is better to now and again ‘run out’ of the product than constantly buying-in too much stock.
Most of it is not caused by ‘fussy eaters’, as one of the chains blamed their loyal customers for their colossal waste.
