THE news that a judge has given the go-ahead for a legal challenge into a decision not to register York’s Germany Beck as the site of the 1066 Battle of Fulford (The Press, April 9) will come as little surprise to local residents.

Chas Jones, the archaeologist who appealed the decision, has worked tirelessly to reveal the truth about the Germany Beck site and its role in English history.

His knowledge and passion to preserve the site were obvious when I joined him for a tour of the battlefield with Yorkshire MEP Edward McMillan-Scott last year.

Chas’ work shows that the site is the most likely location of the 1066 Battle of Fulford, a crucial event in shaping English History and subsequent events of 1066 at Stamford Bridge and Hastings.

I am therefore pleased that English Heritage’s original decision not to register the site on its registered battlefields list will now be properly examined.
