I AM always amazed to see senior police officers such as Chief Constable Dave Jones agreeing to allow members of the private sector into the police service (The Press, April 12).

These people will be managers only; they could not be called on to carry out operational duties, so could not be “called out” like sworn officers when there is a major incident, or in fact take their turn at being on call to cover everyday incidents which need senior policemen and women.

Perhaps the chief constable thinks it will be a good idea to have private-sector managers as chief constables too, but only after he has moved on from that rank himself.
