Shortfall shocker

The cost of staging the Tour de France has increased

First published in Letters by

IT SEEMS that the budget of £1.8m for the Tour de France’s local “event production” was complete guesswork.

A shortfall of £2.3m is unforgivable. Why is it assumed that council taxpayers will pay the difference? Why can’t the Tour organisers pay for their own event? There will probably be substantial entry fees, and the world-wide television rights must be worth many millions of euros. Are we been taken for a ride?

"A shortfall of £2.3m is unforgivable."
Hardly surprising though.
Remember the way the Millennium Dome and the Olympics went over budget?"
"Why is it assumed that council taxpayers will pay the difference? "
Because they have no choice.
"Why can’t the Tour organisers pay for their own event?"
Because they are not stupid. We pay for the event, they make the profit.
"Are we been taken for a ride? "
Yes of course. And many people will be waving their Union Jacks with the "Made In China" logo Tippexed out.

CofY council should explain why there is a shortfall and what has been added to cause the additional £2.3 million.

In any other corporation someone would be held to account and this should be no exception.

Maybe the councils did know but did not want to reveal the true cost before hyping it up and of course it being too late.

It's Leeds council who have announced a shortfall not York. Get your facts straight before writing a completely inaccurate letter.

I suspect that it is to do with any comment that is anti-CofY council.

It's the council vote hacker. It would be interesting to note what days the votes aren't hacked so we can figure out what day he/she has off.
