Clean-up heroes

I HAVE no doubt that over the years the residents of Haxby, who use the alleyway running from the top end of Elden Grove to North Lane, have been appalled by the dreadful state of the alleyway.

The pathway is never properly swept and is covered in weeds, with cigarette butts lying everywhere, and branches hanging in every direction.

But now, thanks to the four people who set out to clean the area, the alleyway is now a revelation. All work was done voluntarily, so as an Elden Grove resident, along with others, our deepest thanks to Angela and John Piercy and Tony and Shirley, but no thanks to the City of York council whose job it is to maintain these alleyways.

Did anyone ever report it? I can't imagine it's very cost effective or a good way to spend money investigating every alleyway in York. But in my experience putting in a call to the right people sees the issue dealt with.

Still, figures CYC would get the blame rather than the people who actually make the mess. I'm sure they were the ones smoking and throwing away their butts in the alley anyway.
