I UNDERSTAND the concern of the people living alongside Monk Stray when faced with the prospect of a month’s use of the Stray as a campsite.

They might find it useful to be reminded that the nominal owners of the Stray are the Freemen of the City of York.

When the Grand Depart is over the owners of the houses might like to ask their friends, the Freemen, to exercise their right to graze two horses and a cow each on the Stray during daylight hours. That might reduce the crowds a little.
