SO, the decision to partially close Lendal Bridge to private motorists which was sold to us as a “six months trial” is to continue for another one, two or even three months.

There is no surprise there really.

It seems obvious that the sheer numbers of people fined indicate that many don’t readily interpret “restricted access” to mean “no private cars”, and most visitors, new to York, don’t know which bridge is Lendal Bridge until it is too late.

Not many people can afford to deliberately shrug their shoulders and accept a £30/£60 fine.

I suspect that the antagonism to the closure is motivated more by mistrust than the need to find new ways to cross York.

Incidentally, I am not a gentleman, and have never been accused of sneering.
