WHILE listening to BBC Radio York the other day, I was rather taken back by one topic and those who spoke in its favour.

Under discussion was the issue of women in senior posts in our boardrooms.

This eventually moved on to short listings for political candidates.

One woman was in favour of all female short listing; to her it was the only way to get more women into national or local politics.

I have to say I totally disagree with this flawed approach.

Surely any short list should contain the names of those people who are thought to be of the right calibre for the post.

That way, we, the voters get a choice rather than having unwanted and possibly unsuitable candidates thrust upon us.
