Just knock it down

York Press: Just knock it down Just knock it down

STONEBOW HOUSE has hardly been used since it was built. It is the most unattractive building I have seen and it should never have been erected in this historic part of York.

The suggestion that it should be decorated in various colours is quite ridiculous. I have only one solution to the problem of what to do with Stonebow House – demolish it.

John Davidson, Middlethorpe Drive, York.

No.

That would be a massive waste of everything. It could be easily spruced up to look very much like the newer "eco" buildings on the other side of town (St Johns etc) saving millions and making it worth keeping.

You can't polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter.

We still have no idea how much it would cost to buy the building (the Council are only buying the land at the moment). I hope all those who just want to demolish it are willing to put their hands in their pockets?

The best possibility would be (if technically possible) to demolish the skyscraper part and tidy up the base.

I dont buy this.
Stonebow house can't find tenants. It has been mostly empty for years and is virtually worthless as an investment. I would have thought the owners will be glad to get rid of it at any price they can get.

However as an empty site with planning permission, the location would be worth many millions. Far from having to stump up, Yorks taxpayers should make a ptretty penny out of the deal

With reference to Whyever, if York Council have anything to do with buying any part of the concrete monstrosity, we have already put our hands in our pockets, the Council does not have money of its own.

imassey, you are dead right. I have not heard where the Job Centre, The Duchess and Fibbers will be relocate. I doubt the Council will have given this any thought and doubt even more if they really care.
To lose two thriving live musc venues would only send York higher up the Cr*p Town's list!
