Stonebow House has never been a favourite building in York so the idea of changing its use to turn an eyesore into arty showpiece (The Press, February 13) containing apartments, shops, etc, may be a good one.

A roof garden and flower boxes for the apartments would brighten up the place, but to have the facade decorated like the Hundertwasser House in Vienna?

As the council will be sole controller of what happens, we have Renyard’s Garage for an example, we just have to hold our breath.

Stonebow House is hideous. It should be razed to the ground and the site sowed with salt.
Unlike Stonebow , Reynards garage is not a prominent building and has been neglected by 2 previous councils before the present one who are thus not fully to blame.

I agree that it is impossible to redeem the fascist architecture of Stonebow house, but I don't think we need worry about it because there is no prospect of it happening. Far cheaper to demolish and rebuild.

Reynards garage is not architecture. It is just a large garden shed with an asbestos roof, a shelter to keep the wind out and the rain off whilst people built a small aircraft. It has no merit which is a pity as the history is interesting. The idea of housing an aircraft museum in such a tiny site is just silly and was always a non-starter.

If people sincerely value the building, I'm sure the council would be happy to let them demolish it free of charge and reconstruct it at Elvington or elsewhere. So why don't they do it?
