Raising Beck worries

Raising Beck worries

WITH all the flooding that has dominated the media recently and the report by the Met Office chief scientist Dame Julie Slingo, and I quote: “While there was not yet definitive proof”, all the evidence supported the theory that climate change had played a role.

She warned that the country should prepare for similar events in future.

With this ‘wake up’ call in mind, surely City of York Council should look at the Germany Beck development and seek further assurance from the developer that they can categorically guarantee that there will be no flooding.

There is also another problem waiting in the wings that is the additional traffic from Germany Beck causing yet more air pollution in Fulford Main Street.

A Watson, Main Street, Fulford, York.

• ON BEHALF of Fulford parish council, I would like to thank all those residents of Fulford and our neighbours in Fishergate, Naburn and Heslington for their sustained encouragement to continue our legal action and for their very generous financial contributions to our Germany Beck fighting fund.

This will allow us to continue our efforts to preserve Fulford’s environment in the face of such damaging proposals.

For details of the fund, please visit fulfordparishcouncil.org.uk

Alan Smith, Chair of Fulford parish council, Fordlands Road, Fulford, York.

Slingo is a puppet of the establishment, as is her side kick Pope. They are both a disgrace to the meteorological profession.
Just a couple of years ago, there was hysteria that because of an especially dry winter that the water table might take years to recover. It actually took just a few months.
Our mild and wet climate usually comes from whatever the Atlantic throws at us, known as the prevailing wind. Last Spring was the coldest for over 50 years because instead we were drawing in air from the Arctic and Siberia. Either way, 18-20 parts per million of man made CO2 can have absolutely no influence on that!
There has been no statistically significant global warming since 1998 and now it has been suggested that 30% of the missing heat has been sucked deep into the Pacific Ocean. Another International alarmist academic I spoke to last year suggested it was the huge storms in the Southern Ocean that had taken the heat down. Too far no doubt to stop the record Antarctic ice extent. But really, does anyone with a brain expect to believe that hot air sinks? So A Watson, please don't rely on warming alarmists as your defence, because even CoYC will take no notice where it suits them.
As for building on Germany Beck, it is a stupid idea, as with building on any of the green belt. Just remember that water has to go somewhere and soil is a better soak up than concrete that tends to be a run off. Flooding will get worse because of the high number of new buildings, population and the lack of ground maintenance, including dredging. As for our City Council, in her statement, I see Mrs England is suggesting that flooding is nothing to do with them, despite how wonderful they are, it is central government cuts to blame! (She said) Meanwhile the tax paying public have to put up with the fall out blowing their way.

It's worth noting that the Jet Stream is currently in the exact same position over the UK as it was in summer 2012 when storm after storm was belted into us. Although the 'climate scientists' don't want to believe in it, the weather does often occur in cycles - some cycles can be short (such as the 2-3 year cycle that causes winds around the northern hemisphere to reverse and become easterly's which then drive bit snow events into the UK) and other cycles can be very long... the last flooding event of such magnitude was somewhere in the region of 200 years ago, long before the industrial revolution and so back then could not be attributed to any human activity...
