I HAD reason to believe that the restriction on private cars driving down Coppergate was lifted each evening at 7pm and all day on Sundays.
This apparently is not the case as I recently received a penalty charge from City of York Council based in, believe it or not, Northampton.
Surely the council here in York has adequate staff to deal with this offence instead of having to send the cheque to Northampton.
I have driven down Coppergate on several occasions a few months ago and took particular notice on Sundays and I saw no evidence of restrictions on private cars.
Not only are the council satisfied with penalising the private motorist to the tune of many thousands of pounds from the Lendal Bridge fiasco, but they need more from Coppergate. It’s a disgrace.
