REPORTS suggest that people could be shoplifting in order to survive (The Press, January 22).

The modern definition of being poor is almost an insult to those who had to endure hardships, trials and tribulations of two world wars.

Such people were deprived of the many luxuries in life that we take for granted.

The idea that we should make do no longer applies – the modern motto being: “I want it now”.

The tempting offers to the most vulnerable to indulge in gambling are ever present, even including credit facilities.

Living beyond your means is a recipe for disaster and Scrooge-like qualities may have their merits. Greed and envy can be a dangerous combination.
