I am fed up with all this pussyfooting around over how few Syrian refugees we as a nation can take. If York is truly a City of Sanctuary, then we should take the moral high ground and offer home to as many Syrian refugees as we can.

How to pay for it? I personally would be happy with a surcharge on my council tax for this good cause. It’s better than many other things we already pay for!

John Bibby, Straylands Grove, York.

Our own "needy" don't face bombing, sniping, chemical weapons attacks and rocket and mortar fire on a daily basis .Perhaps if our borders had been better protected for the last 20 years and more efforts made to keep the estimated 1 million illegal immigrants out, we would have more room in our country and more compassion in our hearts for the genuinely desperate of the world.

Just to get things into perspective. There is a little boy in York whose parents are trying to raise money to sent him to America for life saving surgery. This is a needy cause. And i this country spent money on causes like this instead of throwing it away on foreign aid they would not be in this situation.

I think the government was right to try and help with aid in Syria, Joprdon and Lebanon and where the displaced have gone in the middle East. Only the USA have given more financial assistance!
History tells us that where there is a threat to the dominant home culture through rising immigration will store problems for the future. Kosovo a very good example.
The problem is that some people don't like debate, be it alleged Global Warming or immigration, their minds are closed and to all intent and purpose, their brains are in shut down mode. So sad,
The last census suggested that the Islamic population of England and Wales was 4.8% while one in ten babies were born to Islamic parents.
Now I for one don't wish to store up problems for future generations but this is where we are headed. I know that many Muslims will call themselves peace loving, that is until you mention Israel. We have enough problems on that front with our own Mr Westmoreland, without importing more p[roblems, building up to an uncertain future.
Yes, I feel for all people suffering and helping them is what the International Aid budget is for. We are a very small and very overpopulated country with multiculturism imposed on us. Just don't push it through your Green tinted specs.

Well said Mr Bibby! At last, a frank and fearless declaration of what should be obvious to all: the common humanity we share with our brothers and sisters around the world. "No man is an island ..." etc.

Of course there are needy people here too and yes ... of course they should be cared for (this is why we still - just about! - have a welfare state, though, alas, it's a pale shadow of its former self) and it really doesn't have to be a case of "either/or". Why not both? If the poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer (as so many agencies insist, with good evidence, is happening) then the money is there - just too much of it in the wrong pockets.

Moreover, given that two thirds of the world's wealth lies in the hands of one third of its population, it really ought to be possible to sort out the whole planet. Oh ... I know human nature will always get in the way and corrupt regimes will syphon off a chunk of whatever aid we give etc but surely it's better to do the right thing and fail than to settle into a blinkered, self-satisfied slough of curmudgeonly indifference!

(And I hope that's how you spell "curmudgeonly"!)
