York Press: Something missing Something missing

THE Press recently printed a letter of mine outlining that Government funding was paying for wi-fi on buses and not council tax (Fritter ye not, Letters, January 25). However, in editing my letter The Press added errors.

The version in the newspaper said that: “I want to put his mind at rest in saying no taxpayers’ money is being spent on this project. The Government is paying for all of this.” What I submitted was: “I want to put his and other minds at rest in saying no council taxpayers’ money is being spent on this project. The Conservative Liberal Democrat Government is paying for all of this.”

I understand the need to edit letters but the meaning should remain the same. Government funding comes from all of our taxes and therefore it would be incorrect to say no taxpayers’ money is paying for this wi-fi initiative.

I have tweeted and commented on your website with the full and correct version of my letter as submitted.

Coun James Alexander, Labour leader of City of York Council.

I think we get the gist of what you are saying, it still does not matter, we the taxpayers are still paying for your daft ideas .

It doesn't make me feel any better that the taxes I pay at a national level are being used to fund bus wi-fi, while I get told to pay more council tax as basic, frontline services in my community are being annihilated. It just highlights how badly joined up local and national government is. We're all in it together, unless it relates to politics, in which case it's grab whatever you can get.

Dr !
You might get the gist of what the writer is saying, but help me get the gist of what you are saying.

The Government initiaded the scheme and are paying for it with taxpayers money.
Are you under the impression that it is a York Council initiative? If you are you are mistaken and your jibes should be re-directed to central Government

Well, take it up with central Government or your MP then, all CoYC is doing is implementing a Government initiative. I despair at the lack of awareness displayed on this forum about how government works.
