EAST Riding County Council wisely took the steam out of the Beverley-to-York Minsters’ Rail Campaign by deciding it was not deliverable due to lack of finance; consequently it was decided unrealistic to protect any proposed route from development.

The burning by George Mcmanus, chairman of the campaign, of a supposed list of 10,000 signatures in support of the railway seemed pretty futile as only about 20 supporters turned up.

Who knows, in 20 years time we may have a completely new mode of transport.

Macmanus’s pyromaniac event lit up the fact that there were more reporters than supporters.
