Hypocrites on the Left

York Press: . .

I SEE that my letter regarding the possibility of Roma beggars targeting York roused Mr Lightyear to another fit of bile on the internet (Letters, December 28). Oh dear, how sad, never mind.

Buzz seems to disapprove of my views being aired. Maybe if I wrote in agreement with his views he would raise no objection.

In my experience the modern Left is riven with hypocrisy. There are many Labour grandees in north London, who all live in multimillion-pound houses: Mandelson, the Milibands, Alistair Campbell, the Kinnocks and Tessa Jowell, to name but a few. They all live in secure mainly white enclaves – and wouldn’t dream of living in a majority multiethnic area.

Carole Tucker, Hillside Gardens, Highgate, London.

Ridiculously simplistic letter and hardly original thinking. You can hold views on helping others out of poverty without signing up for the full sack cloth and living in a cave. I believe fervently in ending third world starvation, but I do not feel that view clashes with my own taste for 'unnecessary' nutritional treats such as chocolate and crisps!
Why do so many people have to think in clichés?

And as for bile - I would suggest Carole Tucker writes in a more unpleasant tone than Buzz, just read her letter. "Oh dear, how sad, never mind" - if that is not patronising and unhelpful, I do not know what is! Pots and kettles.

Having just read the original letter, and Buzz's reply. I'll have what Carole's been smoking please. There is no bile in his reply, there are no attacks on Carole. So why has she written to the Press to attack him?

It appears to me she has very thin skin, and is incapable of having a debate. Instead resorting to ad hominem attacks on anyone she feels like.

How very sad.

I can't imagine what the letters first sentence is intended to do other than to inflame racist bigotry against Roma people. A deeply unpleasant letter.

I imagine there will be no apology when the predicted tageting of York by beggars fails to materialise

I'm more concerned about the targeting of York by well-heeled bigots from leafy London suburbs.

Looking back at the original letter, there's nothing personal in BL's response; he takes on the assertions and demolishes them very effectively.

"Carole Tucker" is employing the usual far-right response to any challenge to her ideas, that of playing the victim; "Poor me, those nasty lefties taking away my right to free speech, oh dear, poor me."

Forget to mention, in my hurry to dip my pen nib in bile, that anyone who considers "Mandelson, the Milibands, Alistair Campbell, the Kinnocks and Tessa Jowell" to be remotely left-wing has lost all touch with reality.

Indeed so. It will probably annoy Carol Tucker of Highgate that there are lots of us little people who have seen through the Punch & Judy show in Westminster yet have no intention whatsoever of falling for little Englandism, especially the Farage Show (the man is disturbingly plausible, but then so are all Great Leaders).

Wasn't that the letter which started with "I've recently seen a rash of beggars", at which point I stopped taking it seriously as I could see the calous bigoted tone right from the outset?

I wonder if Carole has always lived in North London? Someone with her name stood for the BNP in the Mackworth (Derby) local elections and failed to convince the electorate that Fascism was the best way forward.
Of course there mat well be two Carole Tuckers, but I'm sure they would have a lot in common.

Buzzz Light-year says...

Just like the architect, Carole Tucker is another who can't do debate without playing the victim.
She reacts to criticism of her opinion as if it were personal abuse towards herself. The two are very different.
Playing the victim is an oft-used technique to avoid dealing with salient points and criticism or correction. It gives that person a reason to feel aggrieved and offers self-justification to attack others.

We've all seen how hard of understanding Carole was with the whole "Behind the Fridge" debacle.

I've been back and read the original letter (thanks for the link Great Buda) and like the other commentators here I can see no "fit of bile" (thank you folks for your support)
Funnily enough, others called Carole a bigot but she chose not to react to that.

The real bile comes from Carole where she uses emotive language like "a rash" of beggars and "unsightly people"

Buzz seems to disapprove of my views being aired. Maybe if I wrote in agreement with his views he would raise no objection.

Yep, it's more UKIP style rhetoric. "Someone disagrees with me - they're trying to shut down my freedom of speech! They're the real fascists!"
Mahooosive difference between disapproving of a view and disapproving of it being aired.
I've lost count of the number of times I've said I'm 100% against censorship and 100% for freedom of speech.
I prefer the record to stand for posterity and without redaction so everyone can see plainly for themselves - saint or sinner, fool or genius, lover or hater.

Anyway, thanks Carole for getting my name up in print again. Now I'm definitely the most mentioned in print. Go me!

PS It seems Carole Tucker has been writing to The Press from her home in London for at least a decade. You can read her past missives by doing a site search for Carole Tucker. Or this link:

There's four pages of her stuff and of reaction to her stuff.
She appears to be very, very down on the Archbishop and not at all keen on foreigners. And strangely she seems to be believing this fantasy that York is fast going to become like living in Grand Theft Auto V. Well it's not happened yet, despite her many prophesies and warnings.
I thought her 100 languages comment was hilarious.
