TWO photographs in Yesterday Once More brought back memories for me and the answer to a query from your staff (The Press, December 30).

Firstly, the “static water tank” was one of many built around the city at the outbreak of the Second World War as emergency supplies for the fire services in the event of water mains being damaged through enemy bombing.

The second picture was of the SS Empire. I was Ernest Shepherd’s first manager there and assisted with the redevelopment of the theatre. This included removing all the seating in the stalls taking down the stage curtains thick with dust and nicotine, and painting the ceiling in mushroom and maroon.

I also negotiated with the Crabtree Brothers to set up the wrestling at the venue.
