I AM thrilled the Tesco talks have been put on hold in Helmsley until a full consultation has been done with all residents.
It will allow everyone to have a voice instead of the NIMBYs shouting loudly and being unpleasant to members of the community. Too many of these people, who are relatively new to Helmsley, have personal business interests in mind and not those of the community.
A Tesco Express would be a valuable asset to hardworking Helmsley residents for many reasons: normal priced groceries, longer opening hours, a click-and-collect service, employment for many people and more people coming in to Helmsley from local villages to shop, not to mention the money that Tesco will donate to community projects.
Yes, there are some superb independent retailers in Helmsley. However, they are aimed primarily at the tourist trade and those who choose to spend over the odds for goods. Tesco is not going to directly affect their niche trade and tourists will still come as they have done for hundreds of years.
Long-standing residents should shout up and make it known that you would welcome a large retailer. The town does not need another upmarket retailer or any more coffee shops.
