IN reply to the letter by John Allan bewailing the speeding notice he received on Easingwold bypass, I have never seen such arrogance from anyone caught speeding. Saying that his fine undermines the reputation of the police suggests that he believes himself to be above the law.

I think a speed awareness course is well overdue.

Mr Allan goes on to tell us the camera crew should patrol where there are clear safety issues, conveniently forgetting how many deaths we have seen on the Easingwold bypass.

I spent more than 30 years in the police service and have seen the deaths and devastation caused by drivers who believed they were competent and could not be taught anything.

• I WOULD like to point out to the hard-done-by John Allan who “apparently” was clocked doing 69mph in a 60mph zone, that since the opening of the Easingwold bypass there have been quite a few road accidents, including more than one fatality.

To say that overtaking two cars and a van travelling at approximately 50mph was totally safe is ridiculous.

Much better to be attending a speed awareness course than your family attending your funeral.
