I HAVE total sympathy for Richard Carr and the upset caused by money being stolen in the post (Letters, December 12).

My three children have birthdays all within two weeks at the beginning of the year. Older family members who don’t live close by have always posted money. They did so for 16 years, until last year.

The children’s cards came through the post as normal; however, six were taped up and once opened we discovered the money had been stolen.

I alerted family and asked that they never send money again.

The post office launched an investigation; two months later they told us that mechanical machinery was at fault.

Now, we all know that as clever as machinery is, it cannot open envelopes, take the money and tape them up again.

So please don’t ever post cash, gift cards or anything of value without using a secure service.

• WE HAD an experience similar to that of Richard Carr, except that there wasn’t cash in our envelope.

On July 19, a card was posted to my son and daughter-in-law in Queensland for their wedding anniversary on July 31.

On August 9, we received a phone call from a woman in Greece who had found several empty screwed-up envelopes in a parcel sent there from Amazon.

The same day, I emailed Royal Mail to report this theft. I had to complete a form twice, which was irrelevant to my complaint as it referred to compensation, which we didn’t want.

The woman in Greece said all the empty envelopes appeared to have contained cards.

I do not want compensation. All I want is assurance that thieves are identified and removed from the workforce.

It is my understanding that it is a criminal offence for anyone to interfere with Royal Mail.
