THE letter of December 3 from Stephen Mortimer regarding Dave Merrett phoning the DVLA about fines on Lendal Bridge is of interest.

The councillor’s comments appear to be bizarre. DVLA say anyone authorised to ask for info of registered vehicles can do so. The woman from DVLA told me it is then the requestors’ decision what the data can be used for and what any subsequent letter contains.

I told her about the letter in The Press and was advised that DVLA is not giving instructions to councils.

When you think of it, if the police or any emergency service request details, does DVLA say what the law enforcers/emergency people can and cannot do? I think not.

The signs regarding Lendal Bridge and Coppergate are still a joke, especially the one on Blossom Street immediately before drivers turn left to the station, etc.

A sign then directs drivers/ motorists down Nunnery Lane, but the law of unintentional consequence kicks in and they, according to recent government legislation, have committed a moving driving offence which can lead to a fine of £100.

These stranded motorists then hold up legitimate traffic using then left-only turn, until they hope someone else will let them in. Is that what the council wanted?
