FURTHER to the article about the council’s health overview and scrutiny committee’s review into personalised social care budgets (The Press, December 3), I wanted to reassure readers that the picture is not as bleak as suggested.

Adult social care welcomes the findings of the committee’s review, recognising that there is a need to further improve the way we provide care support for customers. However, we also welcome the many positive comments from customers who took part in the review. Personalisation necessitates a new way of providing social care. It requires a shift in attitudes and culture, as well as systems, which means that change takes time. Like all local authorities, we are constantly working with partners and customers to find better ways of delivering services in York.

We are absolutely committed to working with customers, their carers and relatives, to enable them to exercise real choice and control over the support they receive.

We will continue to work with all those involved to ensure we can provide the best possible service for York residents.

Dr Paul Edmondson-Jones, Deputy chief executive and director of Adult Social Services, City of York Council.
