Coke lorry? No thanks

York Press: . .

ON PAGE 19 of The Press of November 29, there was a report of a lorry visiting York with associated road closures on Wednesday, December 4.

So what is the “Coca Cola Christmas lorry”? Is Coca Cola paying for the road closure signs to be put in place? Is it giving the council a fee to advertise in the city centre?

Maybe they’re going to give free fizzy pop to disgruntled motorists and delivery drivers who can’t go to where they want on that morning? What has Coke got to do with an ancient Pagan festival usurped by a newer Christian tradition? Is it that this Christian tradition has been usurped by the Church of Commerce, worshipping the great God Capitalism? We need to know!

John Cossham (doesn’t drink Coca Cola), Hull Road, York.

Christmas was a pagan festival long before Jesus came into the equaiton. We have always been a nation of drinkers wether it be beer or coke.

Crikey. A letter in which Mr Cossham *doesn't* come across as an anti-car crank. Xmas has come early.

Yes well. Thanks are due to The Press for reporting that the roads would be closed for this between 7.30am and 9.30pm.
Actually the truck arrived about 10.30 and the "event" will be from 1 till 9.

Poor reporting aside, I'm with Mr Cossham on this. I was aghast to see people thronging round earlier taking pictures of the truck and taking #selfies of themselves with it. WTF? It's a chuffing lorry. It's not THE Coke lorry, just A Coke lorry.
If you want to see lorries go for a spin on the M1, there's thousands of em.

I understand people turning out to scream at pop stars or meet their favourite authors or sportsmen or actors, but to worship a corporate logo?

Sad drones.

I do apologize if you find my posts annoying. The only reason i post comments it to motivate people like yourself, to to come out of hiding and show that you have an opinion. Unfortunately in your case you failed, unless of course you can redeem yourself by explaining your comment to Chissey.

I passed this lorry last night on the way to a talk at City Screen; I walked up Parliament St instead of cycling along Coney St so I could see it in all it's glory.
I had a strong desire to hoot my 115dB refillable air horn and shout "Nigella, I know you're in there" but I *just* managed to stop myself.

On the way back, at about 9pm, I spoke to a Council official who agreed with me that it was a load of crap, but obviously some people loved it, and it had provided a focus for some festive singing, and they confirmed that Coca Cola DO pay a rent to the Council for the space and disruption.

Now, do I submit a FOI to find out how much it was?
