It doesn’t add up

THE Government has recently claimed that because HS2 will create more jobs outside London (70 per cent) than inside it (30 percent) it will help level the north-south divide.
Hang on a minute! According to the 2011 census, the total population of London, the Midlands, and the North is 33.2 million people. London’s population is 8.2 million, fewer than 25 per cent of that total. So 70 per cent of the new jobs will go where there is more than 75 per cent of the population, and 30 per cent of the new jobs will go to London, where there’s less than 25 per cent of the population.
That doesn’t sound like levelling up the north-south divide to me.
