Are we so cowed?
I HAVE read in recent weeks that commemorations in August 2014 to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War are to be “played down” for fear of upsetting Germany.
I now read that plans to include an image of Sir Winston Churchill on a new £5 note were dropped by the Bank of England in 2012 because they “didn’t want to upset the Germans”.
What on earth has become of us in this country? Are we so cowed and lily-livered that we cannot bear to accept our victories over the Kaiser in 1918 and Hitler in 1945?
Germany ‘upset’ an awful lot of people in the 20th century so why, even with the passage of time since 1945, should we be so sensitive about the risk of offending them?
Perhaps we should apologise to America for the War of Independence, and invite them to become a British colony once again.
At least that would get us out of the clutches of the EU and our old foe, Germany.
