‘We provide budget’
I WRITE in support of D. McTernan’s letter of October 7 on the deliberate attack on the rights of motorists which would appear to be a permanent feature of the “traffic management” of in this city.
The writer is 100 per cent accurate in their views, which without doubt are shared by the majority of York residents.
However, I believe he has missed the two most important factors in this argument:
• The reasons for the council’s policies are usually based on environmental issues. Even the most besotted cyclist cannot argue that shutting car lanes and replacing them with cycle tracks does anything other than cause even more pollution — in addition to breaking planning regulations
• How can anyone justify the millions of pounds poured into the installation of cycling facilities, which in the majority of cases are barely used? This at a time when we cannot afford to provide basic necessities for the most vulnerable areas of our society, such as care of the elderly, disabled facilities, mental health issues, ever-growing queues of the homeless.
Forget the old budget argument. There is only one budget and that is provided by us.
