Let me explain...
I WISH to respond to “Buzz Lightyear” who commented online beneath my letter about Godfrey Bloom, published last week.
He writes that I am a “stupid, hoity toity Southern cow”. Stupid?
I’m sure that he will agree that academic achievement does not preclude stupidity – but I do have an honours degree in politics and modern history from Manchester University.
I came from a working-class family and spent my childhood in a council house in Haxby. I received enormous encouragement from my brilliant grammar school, Queen Anne’s, which was so shamefully shut down in the 1980s.
Hoity toity? Don’t’ think anyone who knows me, either here or in York, would describe me as such.
Southern? Yes, I live in London – but I am more of a true tyke than many who have moved to York. I even have a Yorkshire accent.
Cow? An abusive term, which ‘Buzz’ would deplore if applied to women such as those who belong to the feminist sisterhood, much less, say, to a black or Muslim woman.
In conclusion I wish to point out that attempting to suppress views that do not accord with your own, or to resort or personal abuse, is a characteristic of fascists everywhere.
